Once called Siponto, ancient and important port hub of the Roman period, today Manfredonia is a bustling seaside resort where the atmosphere is cheerful and dynamic, typical of a tourist town.
The city also offers many historical and religious sites to visit such as the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Abbey of San Leonardo, Palazzo dei Celestini, the Church of San Domenico, the Swabian-Angevin Castle. The Archaeological Park of the Basilicas of Siponto testifies to the great importance of the ancient city in Roman times, the visitors' center provides multimedia material and information, and a walkway that connects Siponto to the Basilica of St. Mary through the archaeological area.
